PubMatic Success Story
PubMatic Improved Their Ability to Scale Before Going Public
Summary
PubMatic was on the brink of going public, but first they had to identify and address any inefficiencies that could hinder their growth. They recognized that their commission management process was inadequate; they’d been using a spreadsheet to calculate commission for 150 employees, a number they expected to grow significantly. They searched for a commission solution that was reliable, efficient, and flexible enough to grow with the company– and Spiff checked every one of those boxes.
Key Results
- Reduced time spent on commission calculations by several hours per month
- Managed headcount growth with ease
- Increased commission transparency across the entire organization
The Challenge
PubMatic’s commission management process wasn’t built for growth– and with the company on the verge of going public, they knew they needed a more flexible and scalable solution.
Whitney Bradley, Director of Global Sales Operations, oversees a four-person team that manages PubMatic’s commission programs– in addition to other planning, forecasting, and deal management responsibilities– for 150 employees across several global regions – APAC, EMEA & the Americas. Their manual process was a burden on the team, as they used a spreadsheet to carry out commission calculations and generate statements, which they’d then email to each commissioned employee.
Not only was this a time-consuming process, but it also came with a high degree of risk. The team was producing quarterly commission statements and then performing a year-end true-up in Q4, and it was imperative for them to pull off this initiative without errors or miscalculations.
And, with the company preparing for an IPO, they knew they’d soon face added scrutiny from a reporting and auditing standpoint. Relying on a spreadsheet had already created efficiency and accuracy issues– problems that would only be exacerbated if the company entered a period of significant growth reliant on such a manual process.
The Solution
The Spiff platform introduced PubMatic to a risk-free commission management process, finally granting peace of mind to leadership and commissioned employees alike.
As he evaluated potential commission vendors, Bradley recognized Spiff as a young and energetic company that embraced many of the same ethos as PubMatic. More importantly, Spiff promised to be a platform that could both solve urgent challenges and grow with the company on the other side of its IPO.
Bradley’s team saw immediate results after implementing Spiff, both in terms of time savings and accuracy. Spiff supported them during their year-end true-up, mitigating the risk of miscalculation thanks to its powerful automation capabilities and tracing functionality.
Meanwhile, Spiff had a transformative impact on PubMatic’s reporting process and overall transparency. Customizable dashboards gave commissioned employees greater visibility into their earnings, while allowing them to view their history and run reports of their own– a far cry from the limited visibility of their previous process. And, Bradley’s team could now leverage data from Spiff to easily present senior leadership with accurate, actionable reports.
“It was my mission to engage a vendor and solution that would take us to the next level, allow us to grow, and support the volume we were expecting in the years to come.”
The Results
Spiff has been integral to PubMatic’s growth as a company, transforming commission management from a labor-intensive process to an efficient workflow that benefits the entire organization.
Before Spiff, Bradley’s team would dread performing quarterly commission calculations. Now, they actually look forward to the process, with total faith in the numbers that Spiff provides and the positive impact their reports have on the company’s growth.
Likewise, senior leadership is now eager to receive quarterly reports from Bradley’s team, as the insights Spiff provides have enabled more informed, data-driven decision-making. Commissioned employees love interacting with Spiff’s easy-to-use interface and appreciate a greater understanding of their commission history and progress.
With a more streamlined calculation process, Bradley is now able to leverage trend reporting and other value-driving activities that he and his team never had time to perform in the past. “We’re very happy we have taken this step,” Bradley says. “It’s been a great return on investment.”
Commission management, a process that once caused headaches, created risk, and slowed the company down, has now become the opposite for PubMatic. With Spiff, they have a solution they can rely on and actively leverage as a driving force behind their growth.
