Our partners in the Asia-Pacific region kicked off CLS2022 with an opening plenary on July 27 – The Pandemic and Young People’s Media Use and Learning, moderated by Michael Dezuanni from Queensland University of Technology and featuring:

- Annabel Astbury, Head of Education, Australian Broadcasting Corporation
The session featured pandemic era lessons learned, digital pivots and innovations for media creators, educators, and parents.
The U.S. time zone segment of CLS2022 kicked off with the plenary Staying Connected, Fueling Innovation, Affirming Core Values: Three Learning Organizations Carrying Lessons Forward from the Twin Pandemics, moderated by Jal Meta from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and featuring:
- Jessica R. Chaney, lead of CLOUD901 Teen Learning Lab at the Memphis Public Library
- Bill Izábal, President and Founder of Clubhouse ListoAmerica
- Adam Kulaas, Director of Innovative Learning & Career and Technical Education, Tacoma School District
Learn how educator innovators centered their work on equity, care and connection during the pandemic, building digital content, community, and a virtual school serving thousands of learners – and how they are carrying these innovations forward in a “new normal.”
The Asia-Pacific region’s sessions concluded with a closing keynote by Yeran Kim from Kwangwoon University – Towards Digital Modus Vivendi: Living Together Through Connections. Professor Kim offered a view into the digital creative labor of South Korean youth, and a powerful framework for understanding “ways of living” in a digital ecology.
Artist and educator Marisa Morán Jahn closed out the Connected Learning Summit with a joyful and magical keynote on Literacy and Legend-Making featuring her Bibliobandido (“Story-Eater”) project in rural Honduras. See heartwarming videos of young people creating their own stories and movements, and learn about the design principles that Jahn has developed centered on culture, identity, and creative and civic agency – driving “literacy movements that are galvanizing for kids and exciting.”

In addition to inspiring keynotes and plenaries, CLS2022 featured research papers, showcases, exhibits, workshops, and roundtable discussions where educators, designers, and researchers shared their innovations and insights. Research paper and showcase videos are now available on the CLS2022 website and YouTube playlist. Learn about projects ranging from paper circuitry to etextiles programs, game jams for first generation college students, supporting equity in OST and STEM programs, and cross-cultural digital connection building.
