The schedule for the 2019 Connected Learning Summit is available now.
The October 2-5 event, to be held at the University of California, Irvine, features keynote and plenary sessions by leaders in academics, industry and nonprofit organizations; presentations on innovative learning projects and research; interactive workshops on technology research and design, games and other media; a lively “hall of failure,” featuring honest postmortems on projects, programs and products; smart, fast, performative “ignite talk” sessions; and community showcase events for posters and tech demos.
Highlights include:
- A keynote on Oct. 4th from Dr. Eve Ewing, a sociologist of education whose research is focused on racism, social inequality, and urban policy, and the impact of these forces on American public schools and the lives of young people.
- A keynote on Oct. 5th with Tracy Fullerton, an experimental game designer, professor and director of the USC Games program.
- A fireside chat on youth activist movements, featuring Justin Scott, a student, activist, and artist who has worked alongside grass roots organizations such as Students Deserve, United Black Student Unions of California, and Black Lives Matter; and Jessica Riestra, a student and activist currently directing the March For Our Lives effort in California; in conversation with Henry Jenkins, the Provost Professor of Communication, Journalism, Cinematic Arts and Education at the University of Southern California.
- A pre-conference day for conference attendees to self-organize meetings.
Organizers of the Digital Media and Learning (DML) Conference, the Games+Learning+Society (GLS) Conference and Sandbox Summit joined forces to create the annual Connected Learning Summit. “The convergence of these three communities — DML, GLS and Sandbox — promises to catalyze the field of learning technologies in a whole new way,” said Constance Steinkuehler, former chair of the GLS Conference.
The summit will be hosted by the Connected Learning Lab (CLL) and the MIT Scheller Teacher Education Program.
The summit’s purpose is “to fuel a growing movement of innovators harnessing the power of emerging technology to expand access to participatory, playful, and creative learning.” It will feature experts discussing creative and playful learning practices with a focus on access, engagement and equity for children and adults alike. Its aim is to be a place where those excited to take learning to the next level gather to learn about cutting-edge strategies in connected learning.
“The Summit will have a progressive and inclusive focus,” said Mimi Ito, the director of the CLL. “It will bring together people truly committed to progressive, catalytic, innovative and transformative approaches to learning.”
